The U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform's Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs recently held a hearing on the Rise of the Drones and the Future of War. The hearing, held on March 23, 2010, focused not only on the use of UAVs in U.S. military operations, but also on the UAV threat to the United States.
"Now the same technology is spreading to unmanned vacuum cleaners, crop dusters and other equipment, but raising questions about the risks of unauthorized use.
“As this technology develops and becomes more commercially available, we must implement adequate measures to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands,” said Rep. John F. Tierney (D-Mass.)."
“We already know that during the Israel-Lebanon war in 2006, Hezbollah deployed three surveillance UAVs that it acquired from Iran,” Tierney said. “A recent Air Force study concluded that a UAV is an ideal platform for a chemical or biological terrorist attack.”
Congress is considering which government agencies should regulate drone technology.
Lawmakers also want the Homeland Security Department to prepare a response to potential attacks by drones."
